âA pointless trip, like you predicted, Comrade Captain.â Yegor stood legs apart where he calculated the doors of the train would line up when the elektrichka ground to a stop. To make sure we got a seat. Trains travelling into Moscow are more crowded at this time of the morning than ones heading the other way.
âNot entirely. You saw the looks on their faces. Especially the leader. Not only do they know who Lacroix is, they know him well.â
Yegor nodded. âIt was pretty obvious, wasnât it? Rybakinâs denials were too vehement. Theyâre mixed up in some bad shit.â
I nodded. âYes. The murder of Aaron Adekanye to be precise.â
âAnd Ivanov?â
I tugged my bottom lip, numb in the freezing air. âNot directly. My gut tells me Shukhovâs involved. I wouldnât be surprised if that whole tragic affair with Ivanov was a mistake.â
âI donât get your meaning?â
I lit a smoke, a tried-and-true method for getting public transport to arrive when youâve been waiting a while. âWhy take him out? A beloved, non-controversial figure who did his job well. Makes no sense. I reckon they were either aiming for me or it was a warning that got completely fucked up. Rifle misfiring, sniper got the yips, something like that.â
âWhy do you think so?â
âThe rapid response in hunting the shooter. The Spetsnaz were on the spot way too fast.â
âBut if the shooter was an inside man, so to speak, thereâd be no one to hunt, right? Burov said as much already.â
âI see your point. I didnât mention my theory to Burov at the time because I wasnât a hundred percent sure he himself was innocent in all of this.â
A blank stare from Yegor. âWell? Tell me about this theory of yours.â
âWhatâs the one thing the KGB does better than any other organisation in this country?â
âArrest and torture people.â
âThat too. But Iâm referring to the creation of scapegoats and fall guys and then hanging them out to dry.â
âSo youâre sayingâ¦what are you saying, exactly?â
The horn blast from the approaching train caused a bustle of activity on the platform; other folks were also trying to guess where the doors would open and racing for prime position. âIâm saying whoever fucked up decided they didnât want to face the consequences and chose to make a run for it. If it was a KGB operative, thatâs something heâd be very good at. Probably kilometres away before the tactical response boys arrived.â
The train screeched to a halt, the doors burst open and we forced our way in through the crush. No niceties observed, we charged for a vacant pair of seats, collapsed side by side in a breathless heap. All the seats filled within seconds, and soon the aisle was jammed with unlucky commuters too slow off the mark.
âSo, Yegorchik. Any ideas on how to proceed?â I stared out the window as I spoke, too deflated to look at my partner. His silence told me weâd reached a dead end. Three minutes later he spoke up.
âYou tried the Canadian embassy and came up empty, right?â
âThanks for reminding me.
